| Sent to Tangshan Kaiping Mining School, Tangshan, China (唐山开平矿务学堂), in 1882, Liang was one of seven returned CEM students instructed in assaying and mining at the Tangshan school by an American electrical engineer and professor of chemistry and mineralogy, E. K. Buttles.7 |
Worked at Tangshan Kaiping Mining Bureau and became Secretary; Deputy Manager of Shipping for Tangshan Mining and Engineering Co.;
Listed as "Book-keeper" for the Chinese Engineering and Mining Co. in issues of the Chronicle & Directory for China, Japan and the Philippines for 1884, 1885 and 1886; and as "agent" (at Tongku) for the Company's Shipping Department in 1892 and 1893.8
Later joined Messrs. Jardine, Matheson, and Co. as First Representative in charge of shipping in Shanghai, and General Manager of shipping along the Yangtze River in Yichang, Hubei (湖北 宜昌) while the port was open.

5. Chinese sources give “Panyu, Guangdong” 番禺⼴东 as place of origin for both Liang Pao Chew and his younger brother, Liang Pao Shi (Liang Pushi 梁普时 II, 57). Liang Pao Chew, Liang Pao Shi, and Jeme Tian Yau (Zhan Tianyou 詹天佑 I, 15) are known by modern historians as “The Three Boy Students From Xi Guan, Guangzhou.”

Edwin Knight Buttles (1859-1925?) was a graduate of Hobart College, Geneva, NY (A.B. 1881, A.M. 1885). Sent by the Episcopal Church in 1882 to teach "natural science" at St. Johns University in Shanghai, he was soon hired to serve as electrical engineer at the Kaiping Mines and as instructor of the returned CEM students at the mining school. (Rhoads (2011), p. 272, n. 51.) In America he taught chemistry, engineering and metallurgy at Hobart, eventually becoming a priest in the Episcopal Church (from 1917). As clergyman, he was known by the name, Edwin Knight Buttolph.
