Four boys of the First Detachment, Chung Mun Yew, Chang Hon Yen, Wong Chung Liang (“Whang Chung Liang”) and Chung Ching Shing (“Chung T. Ching”) took part in the Springfield Collegiate Institute’s year-end ceremonies in June 1876 by delivering public recitations in four languages: Greek, Latin, Chinese and English. Three of the boys later entered Yale: Chung Mun Yew and Chang Hon Yen, the College, and Chung Ching Shing, Sheffield Scientific School; while Wong Chung Liang entered Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA.
